Miss Singapore World 2012 winner Karisa Sukamto.
She did not have the best body or the height, but she made judges deliberate over the choice of Miss Singapore World 2012 for over an hour. 1.6m tall Karisa Sukamto, 19, was eventually crowned for her charm and personality out of the 14 contestants.
It was a tough fight between Karisa and Michelle Koh, who stands at 1.71m tall and had the stature and the looks of a beauty queen. However, judges felt Michelle had to work on the way she tackled questions. Michelle, 18, was named the first runner-up in the competition.
Pageant organiser Raymund Ooi of Limelite Productions told The New Paper: "So it was a debate on whether language and answering skills could be honed and the height is something one can't change. But in the spirit of Miss Singapore World, where we don't have a height restriction, I told the judges just to look at the marks they scored for each girl, and the girl with the higher marks won."
Miss Sukamto surely fit the Miss World pageant's motto of beauty with a purpose. She told the paper that she had always been insecure about her height and with her win, she wants to be a role model for other girls who have the same concerns.
Always the runt of the family, Miss Sukamto also took home the Miss Celebrity, Miss Charming and Beauty With A Purpose titles. "My mother has always been very encouraging and told me whenever I envy 'supermodel-esque' women who walk past me that I have to find my own niche in this world and shine with what I've got."
"How I will strive to compete with the other women on the international stage is exactly by doing that. I hope the judges ask me questions and find out that just because you're small, it shouldn't define or constrain your possibilities in this world," she added.
Crowd favourite Sarah Noble, 18, noted for her pretty smile, curvy shape and height of 1.72m, was penalised for wearing jeans with her bikini top in the bikini catwalk segment. She explained she was having her time of the month that influenced her choice. This cost her points that almost denied her a spot in the top five. She finished as second runner-up.
