London bus driver who knocked down S'porean student thought he ran over a fox

SOURCE: The Straits Times

LONDON – Driver Shahriar Firouzian told a London court he thought his double-decker bus had run over a fox the night Singaporean student Tan Mingwei was struck and dragged under the vehicle for nearly a kilometre.

Iranian-born Firouzian is standing trial accused of causing Miss Tan’s death by careless driving nearly two years ago.

Jurors were told in court on Tuesday that in the early hours of Sept 30, 2010, Miss Tan was crossing from Fleet Street to Pond Street in Hampstead, north-west London, when she was hit by the bus, which had turned right into Pond Street.

The prosecution contends that Firouzian failed to keep a proper lookout as the student would have been crossing the road in front of the bus. “He totally fails to see her,” prosecutor Hamish Reid told the court.

“She is caught by the bus and dragged underneath it towards the offside.”

The 52-year-old bus driver continued on his route, unaware that Miss Tan’s body was trapped under the vehicle, and even stopped to pick up a passenger.

He finished his shift and found out about the accident only the next day.

Passers-by discovered the body of Miss Tan, 20, a third-year medical student at Cambridge University, after it came free from the double-decker’s undercarriage about 825m from the spot where she was struck.

They called for help, but Miss Tan, who suffered multiple injuries, was declared dead at the scene. A shoe and other belongings were found along the route.

Miss Tan, whom friends described as joyful, talented and enthusiastic, was the younger daughter of Singapore playwright and senior research fellow Tan Tarn How, 51, and his wife, a dentist.

She had taken a bus to Hampstead that night to pick up some luggage from family friends.

On Tuesday, the court was shown closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from her bus and that driven by Firouzian.

Yesterday, jurors were taken to the accident scene by bus to observe, among other things, the positions of street CCTVs and the view that Firouzian would have had from the driver’s seat as he turned into Pond Street.

The court was told that Firouzian had been driving for Metroline since 2003. The London bus company is a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro.

The trial continues.

It's ridiculous that the jurors went to the scene & what did they check ,just trying to cover up the driver. They're not going to get peace of mind too for letting the driver off so lightly like nothing has happend. He went home had a good sleep only to discover the next day he dragged & killed someone. It's really disturbing to hear this sort of justice exists at least not here.

The case maybe be 2 or even 3 years but the tragic memory goes on when an innocent live is lost in a foreign land with no witness except the driver 's side of the story & God knows what Cctv captured as we don't see it but he should not get away so easily as he did dragged her & what fox escape from some jungle. What rubbish story so if he hits an animal it's alright so the student 's death was equal to an animal dying after being dragged.

It's reallyu an unfair judgemnt by the court that the driver was aquitted as there was insufficient evidence to show he caused the S'poren student's death. If he thought he was dragging or hit a fox or any other animal don't tell me he don't stop to check .He was dragging the poor student all along & she was so pitiful & helpless & yet he gets away scott free.So what if he was not speeding he didn't stop to see what he hit as he thought it was a fox & that's outrageous..I feel so sad a young & bright student's life just came to an abrupt end & no charges was against the driver. His concience is going to haunt him for the rest of his life coz everytime he drives that road he will be reminded of what he did.Her parents just want some closure to the incident & carry on with thier lives & no one will understand what they're going thru.Only those who are parents themselves. can feel it if this is indeed a fair judgement or not .Rest In Peace Tan Mingwei.

Them hating us is like us hating foreign/PRs here.
Then again, I don't think we'd go to the extent of dragging a young girl under the bus.. Maybe?

Think this is an accident, and the girl unlucky to be at the wrong place.
Condolences to the family - a child is way way precious than all the money you can have.
