An intern who mishandled and made fun of newborn babies while working as a nurse in a maternity hospital in Hangzhou, China has sparked online outrage.
Xiao Shiyu (above, left), a senior student from Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University, posted several photos showing her teasing sleeping newborns, holding them upright while their heads drooped helplessly and placing paper-cuts on a baby's face to make him look like a pig.
Along with these pictures posted on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, she wrote, "I almost died laughing." and "The babies are too small to resist my mischief."
Her tweets triggered anger amongst netizens. Some doctors warned that a newborn's neck is very weak. Hence, it is dangerous to hold a baby upright without supporting his head.
"She violated medical ethics and hospital rules and caused bad social influence," announced Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University. "We are investigating the case and will punish her accordingly."
The school has reportedly recalled her from the internship.
