LTA to synchronise traffic light and crossing timings at Ferrari crash junction

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) says they will synchronise traffic light timings at the junction of Rochor Road and Victoria Street, the site of two major accidents including the Ferrari crash that claimed three lives on May 12.

Traffic signals at the junction and the pedestrian crossing which links Bugis Junction and Bugis Village will now turn green at the same time.

The LTA said on Monday evening (May 28) that it did not find issues with the existing traffic scheme at that location, but was implementing the change as an "added precautionary measure" based on feedback from the public.

The change comes after two serious accidents at the exact same spot occurred within the space of two weeks.

The first accident on May 12 involved a Ferrari colliding into a taxi, while the second incident on May 26 saw a Lexus driver beating the red light and crashing into a taxi.

You can say its driver's fault, yes it is. But have to see what makes him mistake? The wrong drivers in both cases been driving in speed so it is possible fact that they didn't realize the light was red. What contributed to their wrong move? It is true fact that some drivers were looking at the traffic light at next junction as if theirs. It happened to me few times when i am careless but lucky i realized it on time. So that stratch with many traffic lights near to each other and in atraight view might have confused drivers especially when they are tired. This should have been done long ago. It is not just the drivers to be blamed to, it is also partly the designs of the environment that is responsible.

It does not matter whether synchronised or not - the lights were ignored and he would have still jumped the lights.

I would say traffic lights should synchronize lot more. It would not only avoid accidents, also reduce fuel consumption - in other words, save earth!

Typically social media tends to pronounce the cause of a crash that its reporting sees, let that media play their part in raising the profile and lacks of the system or the uncovering of historical crashes prior to the latest one without interfering with the ongoing investigations.

Secondly the timimg of the signals should have been firstly tested and verified by the traffic authority LTA. If there were so many crashes, were there systems in place to investigate the causes for the crashes before a high profile crash killed 3 people. An audit of the feedback mechanisms and the field systems reporting for these intersections in particular THIS intersection, should be conducted independently.

To be objective Assume all possible causes until one remains. Lighting: The intersection lighting appears dim. Crash wreackage pics seem to be captured with better light a distance away. This needs explaining. The pics show a dim junction and the brighter zones where the wreckage lie after this intersection seem contrasting. If possible get taxi video images at night approaching the same intersection on the Rochor Road and compare approaching videos. If there are many intersection crashes here there is an intersection design as a possible cause. Human beings merely add to its limitations when they use it under the influence of alcohol.
