Mysterious underground city in Turkey thousands of years old: Who built it?

The Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient underground city in Turkey built thousands of years ago, which has 11 floors extending to a depth of about 85m. Who built it remains a mystery.

STOMPer Archie Ology, who received these pictures via email, said:

"The city could hold between 35,000 and 50,000 people, complete with wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, chapels and religious schools.

"Since it was opened to the public in 1969, only 10 per cent of the city has been excavated and made accessible to tourists.

"To this day, no one knows how the underground city was created and for what purpose.

"Theorists speculate that aliens with superior knowledge of science and engineering built the city thousands of years ago before abandoning it."

First built in the soft volcanic rock of the Cappadocia region, possibly by the Phrygians in the 8th–7th centuries B.C according to the Turkish Department of Culture, the underground city at Derinkuyu may have been enlarged in the Byzantine era. The city was connected with other underground cities through miles of tunnels.
