What is our Merlion doing in China?

STOMPer Chee Keong spotted a statue of the Merlion in this park in China and wanted to share his pictures with STOMPers. He says:

"Does this figure look familiar to you?

"While I was having my vacation with my wife in China, I spotted this 'migrated' Merlion at a park.

"I believe this is something interesting to share.

"It is a gift from Singapore to China back in 1994.

"Therefore I hope the younger generation of Singapore can live peacefully together with the foreign Chinese nationals as the bond and close ties between us has long been established."

OMG! Do y'all actually read Chinese? Click on the first thumbnail and the answer is there! It reads: Chong Pang City (Yishun) is officially a sister city of "xin-du" (apparently where the pic was taken)in the year of 1994. This Merlion was given by the spore govt as a memento to commemorate this meaningful event.
