Boon-Tiong and his friends love 80s music so much, they decided to throw their own retro party, complete with personalized posters, DJs, a smoke machine, and of course, a disco ball.
Boon-Tiong shares:
"What transpired our awesome party was the love for 80s music. You see, there’s a group of us on Facebook who absolutely love 80s music. As the club and pubs around us hardly spin such tunes anymore, we always get our fix from video postings on Facebook.
"One day, a few of us decided to throw a small party to just chill and have 80s music played. However, the original function room that we booked disallowed us to bring our mobile music equipment, hence we had to source for another place which allowed that.
"The next venue was pretty big so we thought why not throw a bigger party to maximize space and help cover cost. We originally planned to have a cozy party, but ended up having 80 people on our guest list! Our guests were all 80s music lovers from Facebook.
"We started our party planning about 1 month prior. The committee met up once a fortnight to finalize the details. We had personalized posters, our very own DJs, enough drinks for a mini bar; smoke machine, mirror ball and lightings. We even planned for games and lucky draw prizes, just like a company’s Dinner and Dance event.
"The actual day was March 3, 2012 at the Civil Service Club Function Room. The committee had their specific duties to make sure everything went well. Although the party officially started at 6pm, we had to be there early to settle the logistics.
"The guests started arriving by 6pm for dinner and by 6.45pm, we had the first song blasted over the super speakers. To heighten the level of awesomeness, we coincided music videos with the music played. The crowd went wild and everyone danced and sang along. The DJs were so superb in engaging the crowd.
"In between the party, we had 2 games session. We included games like zero-point, chaptek, 5 stones and it was so fun as a lot of us were brought to our childhood days. Our lucky draw prizes also got the guests excited. With prizes like gym/spa membership, iPad and a cruise to nowhere, it is no wonder the guests were very happy.
"As they say, all good things must come to an end. By 11pm, we had to stop our party. The committee was very happy that our inaugural party had been such a great success. Here are pictures from our 'Back To The 80s' party... Mambo Party, Big, Bold Bright."
