When Jia Jia started working while Shermin remained in school, the pair drifted apart. Their friendship remained strong however, and the girls are still best friends today.
Jia Jia wrote:
I met Shermin in primary two at Yumin primary school. Sometimes after school we will 'date' each other out for swimming sessions with our parents, as we were still young at that time.
"We started getting close when we were in Primary 5. After school, we would play games like catching and ice & water at the playground with others friends.
"During that time our friends would always bully either one of us into being the catcher, or do something against us which is unfair. After awhile, Shermin and I stopped meeting these 'friends' of ours because we were sick of being treated unfairly.
"From that moment our bonds of our friendship started. We start hanging out together everyday, we would skip school together, we would hang out outside together, we wore the same clothes out, and did every single thing together whether it was good or bad for us.
"She was just like a blood sister to me. After our PSLE we actually get into the same school, Changkat Changi secondary. We would meet each other early in the morning for breakfast and purposely be late for our school.
"We would meet everyday for recess and after school. Even though we were not in the same class and our timetables were different (one of us would always end class earlier), we were still willing to wait for each other to finish class.
"Eventually, I stopped studying and I needed to work and some relationships and new friends came between us, causing us to drift apart. We quarrelled, fought and argued but there we had an agreement we made when we were young.
"We promised each other that no matter what caused us to quarrel and no matter whose fault it was, within 3 days, we must apologise and forgive each other. Until now this agreement is still valid.
"Even though we aren't as close as we were in the past, we are still best friends. This year is our sweet 16 birthday and we will still be there for each other.
"Though we don't meet up everyday due to our schedules but we still make time for each other. We also have plans to travel to other countries for holidays.
"Even though she is still schooling now and I am working, I will never forget those days when we shared our sadness and happiness together.
"Thanks for being through thick and thin with me, we'll always be each other's listening ear. I love you my BFF <3"
