Fancy a stroll? You can't -- not with these trees here

STOMPer Teo says this narrow pavement has had trees planted on it, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road there.

The STOMPer wrote:

"This narrow strip of pavement in the vicinity of Soo Chow Gardens has become obstructed by trees planted there.

"As a result, people are forced to walk on the road, endangering themselves especially at night.

"It's just waiting for an accident to happen. Surely, the authorities can be creative while still making the narrow pavement safe for people to use."

Victims of road widening? Alot of spacious pavement with mature trees were cut back to widen roads in the past, and this is what is left.

The photos do suggest that the narrow pavement is already there, before the palm "trees" were planted into the existing pavement. The situation appears to be a shortsighted, knee-jerk reaction to a complaint/ request for some form of "non-shedding" shade/ greenery at the site.

Whilst an able-bodied person can still navigate around the piecemeal pavement in daylight, the pavement (& the road) can become hazardous or impossible for disabled/ elderly users regardless of day or night.

The officer should have considered alternative planting locations, or implemented complementary measures (eg. widening the pavement). Or better still, instead of forcing palms or trees into the narrow pavement, the officer could have installed a simple semi-pergola over the path, & planted this with low-maintenance climbers.
