As a dinner party lover, Sheila Pandji, executive director of a financial services firm, loves the one-of-a-kind open-concept kitchen in her home. It is in this specially designed space that she whips up mouth-watering treats for her guests.
The four-storey cluster house is home to her family of six, including her three young children.
With a taste for all things unique, Sheila has designed her house with signature pieces that are often produced in limited editions.
She says:
"I live with my husband, father-in-law and three young kids.
"We bought out four-storey cluster house for $1.7m and only recently moved in on the last day of 2010.
"We worked with Interior Affairs, a European kitchen and bathroom solutions provider in Singapore.
"The main theme and what makes this house special is actually the kitchen, which is a unique open concept kitchen and also the first thing one sees when walking through the front door.
"I particularly like throwing dinner parties for friends, which is also one of the reasons why I decided to install an open-concept kitchen.
"Having the kitchen at the heart of the house, is all part of the couple's home philosophy. Whichever way you look, the kitchen is always in view and has always served as a key conversation starter for my family when we have neighbours and friends over.
"The kitchen is definitely a key design feature in the house, and also something that I am very proud of.
"The rest of the house also reflects my taste for signature pieces from niche brands that often only comes in one piece.
"We have always been clear about how we want the house to look, even if it means hunting down various brands to find unique buys. Being fans of bold, signature pieces and designs, the backyard features eye-catching and enormous disproportionate chairs from Platform.
"We used mirrors and lighting to open up the tall and narrow house. Interior Affairs recommended an open kitchen to expand the space further, integrating all the rooms in the house fluidly, without isolating one room from another.
“The consultant took my brief and developed a totally different kitchen concept from what I had in mind, but yet it still met and even exceeded our requirements.
"Now I have an open kitchen, which is perfect for dinner parties, something that I have always wanted to host more often because I love having family and friends over.”
