Do youths have too much time on their hands during the school holidays, that they are getting involved in violence? STOMPer FatalFury poses this question after reading about the stabbing of a Raffles Institution (RI) student after a staring incident on The New Paper.
According to the news report, the 17-year-old RI student, whose first name is Anand, was with his friend Don Tan, also 17, at a McDonald's outlet in Potong Pasir at about 1pm yesterday (Dec 1) when they got involved in a staring incident with two boys.
Don said later that he and Anand left as they felt uncomfortable, but the two boys followed them to his block. However, they left after Don's father spoke to them.
When Don and Anand went to nearby coffeeshop to have lunch, the two boys showed up again and told them to follow them to a nearby block to "settle this once and for all".
Don and Anand reluctantly followed them to Block 122, where they were ambushed by a group of youths. Don suffered a bruised right eye, but managed to flee, but his friend Anand was stabbed.
A witness, Mr Chan, said that he was at a coffeeshop at Block 137 when he heard four teenagers talking about organising a fight.
He dismissed their comments, thinking that they were just kids, but as he was walking back to his flat, he heard shouts and apparently saw Anand limping towards a nearby clinic, with a bloody stab wound on his back, shouting, "Help! Call and ambulance!"
Anand later collapsed in front of the clinic.
The police said that they received a call at 4pm about an injured person at Block 137, Potong Pasir Avenue 3.
Upon arrival, they found a boy in his late teens, who was conscious. He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Two boys, aged 17, were arrested in relation to the incident.
STOMPer FatalFury said:
"It seems that these youth gangsters create trouble during school holidays. It's really worrying because many kids go out to have fun during the school break, and when we have hooligans like these roaming the streets, it seems no one is safe."
On Oct 30 last year, Darren Ng, 19, was murdered in a gang-related attack at Downtown East.
Then on Nov 8 the same year, eight youths armed with parangs and metal rods attacked innocent bystanders at Bukit Panjang.
Ten days later on Nov 18, another teen was slashed outside a fast food outlet at Block 448, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
