STOMPer Victor has observed a group of people who would gather around a durian tree and wait for the fruit to drop. They would apparently take turns to wait day and night, and even quarrel over the fruit sometimes.
Said Victor (Aug 24):
"Man versus tree.
"These uncles are seen gathered around a tree, not to look for lucky numbers or hide under the shade from the hot sun, but to wait for durians to drop.
"Every day, uncles and aunties gather around the tree in anticipation of free durians.
"24/7, there'll be at least one person waiting by the tree.
"At night, they will shine their torches on the ground to see if there are durians.
"The first one to pick it up gets to keep it.
"Sometimes they even end up in quarrels or fights over who is supposed to keep the fallen durians.
"The tree is located on a hill along Woodlands St 13."

nice pic too stomper.
If the fruit trees are planted by the govt (be it NParks, SLA, HDB or town council), the public are not allowed to remove the fruits. So thank goodness for kampung trees, wherever these still exist in S'pore.
Whether the fruit-gatherers are old or young, & regardless of the kind of fruits, I think the fun is more in the PROCESS & not just the end-product. When you harvest the fruits yourself, you also get acquainted with the parent tree & its surroundings. Buying supermarket fruits don't quite evoke the same kind of experience.
