There are proper places to burn joss paper, but resident still chooses to burn them here

STOMPer heyboy nearly stepped into this pile of ashes near his home in Bedok. He feels that burning joss paper on the ground instead of at designated places counts as vandalism.

In an email today (June 19) the STOMPer wrote:

"Who are the ones who burned incense on the floor here in Bedok?

"This afternoon I almost stepped into this incense on the floor below my unit.

"I thought burning incense should be done in the furnace? How could people do it here on the floor?!

"Is this considered vandalism? There will be a big burn mark even after the place is cleared. These people should be fined for their actions."

For those who support the burning, why don't you do it within the confined area of your own flat? Isn’t this what you believe in? Let your actions prove it. Yet the fact is that you are not. As you know - by burning, it affects your personal health and environment. It's pure selfishness to allow the ashes and smoke to affect other residents' well-being. You do not even have the basic decency to think for those with asthma and eczema condition - wind pipes close up in contact with smoke and rashes pop up on the entire body as a result of wearing clothes that have the residue of the joss paper (carried by wind to clothes hang outside to dry). Why should the other residents tolerate your selfishness and laziness to go to the temple to burn? Why should we suffer for your sake? Do not hide behind the masks of religion and tradition to persist in your anti-social acts. This is a behaviour issue; it has nothing to do with religion. Your inconsiderate actions give religion a bad name.

govt shall impose a law tat we can only burn incense in temples, n all bins to b removed from housing estates. There must b at least a temple in each neighbourhood n within walking distance. Voluntary patrol residents shall spot check n remind residents of the fine n to keep our vicinity pollutants free in order to ve a harmonious community. Easy to say.

To one person, it may be easy to SAY. Say n complain is easy as ABC but ultimately r u the one taking the initiative n leadership?

Who is going to walk the talk n Who is Accountable if the plan backfired?

If the govt is really imposing such a law, I think it will be after my lifetime...

I totally agreed wif u tat certain measures shd be taken to improve the situation.

However, if it can b resolved easily as wat u ve cited, u think our govt will not take appropriate actions?

There r many considerations n factors to weigh before every implementation.

Thank you @ upinipinpart
We as Singaporean should address the issue especially it affect our health and environment rather than "Siam" here & there, might as well learn to fly during the 7th month to avoid stepping on the incense burning mess. Why fine the cigarette butt litter on the floor but not the big burning incense mess on the ground? Don't just suppressed the above issue as religious belief which will gradually lead to religious disharmony.

Singapore is a multi-religious country and also a first world country (Clean & Green) therefore we should learn to love and care for people & the environment, not learn to tolerate each other knowing is wrong and classified as "sensitive" excuses.

Singapore Taoist Federation please help to educate your devotees the right teaching and attitude towards the community in the press or TV media.

U don't have eyes to see or u r simply ignorant? Juz Siam will do right? If u step on it n sth bad happens, it's all ur superstitious thinkings. Why so narrow minded? Why do u need to purposely walk there n even took photo of it? Nothing better to do?FYI, I m staying on low floor too n I don't burn incense ok
