SCDF rescues maid trapped in Jalan Rajah fire

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rescued a maid trapped in unit that was entirely engulfed by fire at Jalan Rajah.

The SCDF crew used cutting and braking tools to cut open the iron gate and rescue the maid.

STOMPer QK sent in this photograph of the fire which he snapped from his home.

The STOMPer recounted:

“This was like a midnight fire. I reached home at around one in the morning to the spectacular view of a column of black smoke rising into the city landscape.

“Evidently, a sizeable fire had broken out shortly before at the Balestier area.

“The fire brigade presumably got the fire under control at around 1:45 as the smoke turned grey and diminished in intensity, soon leaving just a patch of black clouds in the city skyline.”

A spokesman from SCDF said:

“The unit fire occurred at 1:09am today (Nov 7), at the fourth floor of Block 108 Jalan Rajah.

“At 1:09am, SCDF received a call informing that a unit is on fire at the above-mentioned location. SCDF responded within 6 minutes to the location.

“A fire engine, two red rhinos, a support appliance and two ambulances were deployed.

“On arrival, the crew found the unit fully engulfed with fire and the maid was trapped in the unit.

“SCDF crew used cutting and braking tools to cut open the iron gate and subsequently rescued the maid to safety. She was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for observation.

“The fire was brought under control in 10 minutes. The unit suffered extensive fire damage.

“Another female Chinese, who was from the unit directly above the fire, was also conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for observation.

“Residents on the 4th floor and upper floors were evacuated by the police as a safety precaution.”

What this friggin buzz all about? Okay attention seekers, we're prolly seeing things from a different angle. The lady wasn't fried to bits. No, what I saw was a young hero running his ass down a few storeys with a lady hauled over his shoulders. Kudos, dude. Seriously. Ultimately no one friggin died. It's just effin weird for these men who'd risked their lives to save a life to listen to such useless hateful banter. If you *****s honestly think that you could do a better job, why not sign your sorry no-life-ass up as a fire fighter. We'd like to see you run around with hoses and try not to shit in your pants while fighting that fire. If not, stop being such a waste of sperm and spare us from listening to your nonconstructive contribution.

@exilus8888: by the way, i notice one last flaw in your statement. Since you don't have much patience, you should have helped to tell them that the water hydrant is just below the blocks instead of making them go searching for one that is so far. so NOW, may i say that it's you who caused the delay in time to put out the fire? OPENESS to critisms is important for them to improve, but they must see what kind of people are those who criticised. I don't think you fit the bill. So i'm not surprised if they repudiated to your viewpoints. =/

@exilus8888: I admire the efforts of those who helped. but did you? and i agreed that they should be more prepared, but no people can be perfect in what they do. you said that they ask for direction to a non-existence unit, but think again, who's the one who told them the unit was that? Must be the caller right? It's not their fault of receiving wrong information. And it's our job to correct them!!! so ask yourself again. DID YOU?? lastly, firefighters are not supermans, don't expect them to reach there so fast as though they flew there and also to know everything with their super eyes. oh ya by the way, may god bless you if some mishaps happen to you and your loved ones too.

If your family member was the one burning in the flat, i wonder if you would have as much patience. Everyone at the scene was feeling helpless and a group of ladies was even praying for the safety of the victim. Before that some gentlemen even risked their lives to save the maid by breaking the gate. So noone was standing around just to watch the "show" If you are the victim, or have friends and loved ones trapped in the fire, you would be frustrated to see how the see the situation was handled. Shouldnt the live savers been more prepared? Afterall, when a situation happen, we depend on the professionals to save our lives. As a professional force, the SCDF should be open to the public's feedback and improve on its readiness to save more lives. For those who thinks that feedback = flaming and live with complacency, i wish you luck the next time some unfortunate event happens to you or your loved ones.
