Got service or not?
Rude staff ask me to pay for broken mug in demanding tone

When a STOMPer broke a mug at an ornament fair, he paid for it compliantly. However, he was shocked when the staff approached him disrespectfully and even ignored his request to keep the box.

Not only did they throw away the box when he asked to keep it, the service staff also demanded he pay for the item instead of explaining the rules of the store.

When he tried to make a complaint at the main store, he was rudely shut down by the service staff, who hung up on him abruptly.

In an email, he says:

"At 2.30pm today (December 13), I patronised Great World City.

"I was at the atrium and there was a shop that sold mugs and other Christmas decorations at the atrium called 'Gift Greetings'.

"While browsing through the mugs section, a mug (that was placed directly at the edge of the display shelf) fell because I accidentally bumped into the shelf.

"Four part-time staff immediately came over to check and after clearing the mess, they handed me an empty box to pay at the counter for the damaged item.

"A girl in her teens came up to me and said in a very demanding voice: 'Pay at the counter!'.

"At the counter, I paid for my other stuff (as well as the item I damaged) and when I asked for the empty box (from the item I damaged), they ignored me and threw it away.

"First of all, the mug that fell was placed directly at the edge of the shelf, it could have been that a customer was browsing and left it there. BUT if they had four staff members to attend to me when I broke the mug, why couldn't t anyone of them re-position the item?

"Could it be that they were plain lazy or was it that it was done on purpose? After all, if a customer damages it, they still earn from it.

"Upon reaching home, I called up the main shop located on the upper floor of Great World City and a very unprofessional individual asked me in a rude tone when I said that her staff were being very rude at the atrium.

"She said, 'Now the problem with you what'.

"Shortly after that, she told me she needed to use the line for a credit card payment and she hanged up on me.

"What level of service am I getting from a shop at Great World City?

"I think the management should look into this matter and make sure that shops should have a certain level of customer service."

You don't have to buy the item at retail price. Just offer to compensate a replacement with the item's cost price. If they reject, leave the place. It does not matter what they say or signs they put up, this is your consumer rights (check with CASE).
They can't do anything to you, even if they file a police report.
These staffs are part-timers. Can't expect too much on their quality, but I do agree it is really low. Just your luck man~

i believe as always that no customer will be so kind or/and happy enough to pay for their mistake(s). therefore they will start to accuse the shop assistants or other customers for their responsibilities. i met a lot of customers of this sort while working as a salesman in a mega store.when the parents left their kids to play or run around the store, resulting in the kids getting injured from falling or hit something, to the extent of breaking our goods, the parents will still want us to pay for their kids injuries, but what about our damaged good? they will always reply, "your company so big, got a lot of money so don't make it a big deal"..singaporeans are singaporeans, die die also don't admit their faults (minority only la)

why are some comments so one sided??? Is it becos of the economic crisis? Low pay=Low services?? Please do your job la. If you wan to be in the service line, you're paid to provide services, and please.... good services, if not, go home la.... 今天不努力工作,明天就努力找工作咯

It's disgusting reading many of the comments here. Singaporeans really have lost all understanding of right and wrong. Graciousness? We have gone so far from that it seems like it can never be achieved.

Yes, an accident happened. The customer may be held accountable, then again so can the store. You people have no idea of your rights as consumers and go about making simple minded assumptions and speak as if it's given fact.

That aside, there is simply no excuse for being rude to anyone, let alone a patron of your store whether you are the owner or just a worker there.

You won't want the salesgirl to keep following you around too right? You'll definitely feel uncomfortable and just leave. So why do you wanna complain about their "negligence" at work? I'm sure they're just abiding to their rules at woork, trying to allow their customers to have more space to their own. Breaking of glass is dangerous, why would they hope for someone to break the items at their fair? Sweeping up glass isn't easy job, they might hurt themselves while picking up the "litters" after you.

It's just a 10 bucks worth of mug, why blow up this incident for nothing in return at all? If I broke something in a shop, I'll willingly pay for it, afterall it's my fault and I can't expect the workers there to pay for my own mistake. They're there to make a living too, why make life hard for them? And I believe they're only students who take up part-time job now to gain some experience before their schoolyear starts again. Thus, this says that they're trying to learn. Trying to see how the outside world is and how working is like. Just give them time to learn alright? Don't make yourself to be seen as a petty man.

i think if really is e customer who broke the item, he should pay for it... and some more now is christmas season.. please man, use some thinking skills, they will all be busy serving customer. i do work at retail shop before and the NETS and CARD payment all need telephone to get through. if u r on the line for too long, how will the customer in the shop be able to make their payment. i believe that they are also trying their best to listen to u.
