Roselyn has never let her own suffering get in the way of charity. She has been actively helping for charity organisations like 'Foor from the heart' for the past six years.
Her son and nominator, Augustine Yong, got inspired to send in this nomination after reading an article on 'The New Paper' on August 9, on another charity worker who didn't let his disability get in the way of his active lifestyle.
Says Augustine:
"This is the true story that I want to share and I wish to make her stand out from the rest as well, that handicapped people is also an able person, who can go the extra mile to help others.
"She had told me before that life is too short for us to sit back, think over and cry again over the past unhappiness event or happening, which we were trying to forgive and forget.
"But rather to appreciate things that are currently with us, with people around us and the situation we are in.
"Her wish is to bring happiness, smile and joy to as many people as possible through just by doing a simple act, i.e. spending a few hours trying to help individual that make a great difference in his or her life.
"Life had not been easy, she had to single-handedly raise 2 sons for the past years, since they were small boys.
"Working very hard to earn a decent living to take care of her children, loving them physically, comforting them when sick and gave listening ears when in doubt.
"Her only asset that carries to her destination of various places of her volunteer work is her only left leg. As her right leg is weaken by polio when she was 1-year old.
"However, as years passed, her good leg became over-used due the stress, but she still continued to spread her unconditional love to others, no matter how rough things get to.
"With her poor and humble family background and on top of her handicap, I am sure she could overcome the obstacles and beat the odds.
"The fact is that, she has the determination to help as volunteer worker with 'Food from the Heart' for the past 6 years. Come rain or shine on every Tuesdays and Sundays, she will head to the distribution centers with happiness, to distribute breads and goodies to the poor and elderly at Kings George Senior Activity Centre and Kelantan Court RC Centre.
"She also has helped on ad-hoc basis - President Challenge 2003, Miss Singapore International Charity Dinner 2006, 2007 & 2008 and also Ren Chi Hospital.
"She even said as long as her leg can carry her body movement, she will continue to serve the unfortunates and the needy, whenever she can, in order to make other people's life a better one to live.
"She, also help her members in an non-profit organization calls Toastmasters International in Queenstown CC and Cairnhill CC as members, as well as Marine Parade CC Club as Mentor. I believe with her commitment, care and passion, she has enriched, guided and shapes many of them to become better and confident people in communication and leadership skills.
"At the same time, she led her Queenstown Club to achieved 100% in Club Distinguished Program as President last year.
"What is more importantly is that her story can be shared and inspired to others. I believe she will continue helping the charity in monetary contribution to Children's Home, Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Heart Foundation, World Vision etc as long as she is being employed.
"I remembered that during the downturn of National Kidney Foundation, many supports and donors have stopped or terminated their contribution and monthly giro deduction. However, she for one, still continue her monthly giro to NKF till today, as she had said it is the patients that need help and we have to be there to safe their lives.
"Just imagine a handicap person with generous heart that brings big smile, greatest joy and colorful lives to others behind the scene and unknown to many others.
"After saying so much about this Wonderful Woman, she is none other than my very own loving mother - Roselyn (or Rose as she is often being addressed by all her friends).
"I like to nominate this senior citizen, who hopes to lead her beautiful life in her golden years gracefully, which is a source of inspiration to others.
"I believe and I am sure that many people out there will share the same believe that she will continue to shower her unconditional love to the unfortunate and bring joy, smile and happiness to them."
