Mr Yam Ah Mee, everyone's favourite Returning Officer for GE 2011, explains that his monotone voice is the result of a throat surgery due to a fishbone.

The man responded to his overnight fame in a statement explaining his, by now, trademark voice.

Besides videos, posters and a Facebook fanpage, it is not surprising to see that 'Yummy' Yam Ah Mee merchandise is now available.

With his Facebook page inundated with friend requests, he joins the ranks of the super-popular this election season, alongside such GE 2011 favourites as PAP's Tin Pei Ling and NSP's Nicole Seah.

Some netizens have created music videos using clips of his voice and there are even collectible mugs, badges and t-shirts bearing his likeness available online.

Fans have also created a Facebook fanpage titled 'Yam Ah Mee, Returning Officer Extraordinaire', to show their support for Mr Yam. The page includes a picture gallery and a flood of praise for him:
