After national bowler and SEA Games coach Remy Ong, 33, hit a stray dog with his Porsche at Changi Coast Road, he immediately left the scene, leaving the injured dog to die. Netizens are enraged at his actions, calling him 'inhuman, cruel and a disgrace to Singapore sport' after the incident went viral online.
A passing cyclist, Danny Ng, 18, saw the dog lying on the ground with a licence plate next to it at 12.55pm yesterday (Feb 19). He soon found out the licence plate belonged to Remy Ong, as the bowler returned to the scene 20 minutes later. The dog also passed away soon after.
Danny recognised Remy Ong, as he was a bowler too, and the man reacted when his name was called. Another witness, Sean, confronted Remy Ong and questioned his actions, resulting in a heated argument that lasted about half an hour.
Remy claimed that at the time of the incident he was not sure if he had hit the dog. He had seen it coming from behind a tree, but "came back because I didn't feel right while I was on my way to pick up a friend." The national bowler has also accepted responsibility for the accident.
Talking to The New Paper, eyewitness Danny also mentioned he saw Remy with a woman who was seen laughing and smiling. She also remarked that the "car plate was cheap". "If Remy had given [the dog] immediate attention, it might have survived the hit," Danny added.
The SPCA has confirmed that the dog, a three-year-old female 'cross-breed', was not pregnant.
Under the Road Traffic Act, anyone involved in an accident where a person or an animal is injured must stop the vehicle to help the victim. Those who fail to do so can be fined up to $3,000 or jailed up to a year. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $5,000 or jailed for up to two years.
STOMPer Sean sent in a photo, along with his account (Feb 19):
"An irresponsible driver hit a dog and ran away from the scene. Thank goodness the car plate was left at the scene!
"The driver that was involved in the hit-and-run accident is none other than international bowler Remy Ong! What a disgrace to the Singapore national bowling team.
"'She' passed away in front of me...I can't help but shed tears...I tried my best to control but it no use...It was so heartbreaking.
"The female dog had two broken legs, suffered external bleeding as well as internal bleeding -- and you can see blood from her mouth and nose.
"Remy Ong you think the dog's life is worthless? Do you realise what's wrong?
"In the photo taken by Danny, three people are gathered around the injured dog.
"The guy in a white T-shirt came out of one of the chalets nearby and offered his help.
"The man in red with a woman in white on the right side of the picture are Remy Ong and his female friend respectively."

"Remi Ong knocked down a dog, did not stop to check on the dog but drove off. After the impact, he left his car number plate lying on the road."

"Apparently it is alleged that Singapore national bowler Remy Ong knocked down a pregnant dog and fled from the scene before going back to collect his car plate which dropped off in the accident. He and his girlfriend give two different stories."
