Caught in the Act
SAF will take appropriate action against serviceman who made maid carry backpack

The Singapore Armed Forces says it will investigate the case of a national serviceman who had apparently made his maid carry his backpack, and take the appropriate action.

The response came after a photo was posted in STOMP, showing a young man dressed in army fatigues walking in front of a woman carrying what seemed to be his backpack.

The story was later picked up by The Straits Times.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said in response to the report in The Straits Times that "the SAF takes a serious view of the conduct of its servicemen in public" and that it will investigate and take the appropriate action.

The story had sparked a debate among STOMPers, on whether Gen Y soldiers are too 'soft', 'spoilt' and 'pampered'.

There are some, however, who wondered if a shoulder injury had prompted the 'maid' to carry the backpack for the serviceman.

Yet another wayang fest..... Mindef taking unnecessary actions just to "uphold" it's dignity and reputation, or what's left of it. How sad.

All because of one man or woman with a trigger-happy mind , taking a picture and so many youngsters got flak . Live and let live . We don't live forever on Earth . Is the STOMPER happy now that the person in the picture got into trouble ? Instead of telling him in the face , now he and many young man and ladies alike are labeled "strawberry generation" . One small trickle becomes a huge tidal wave , haiyoh .

This field bag is too heavy for a poor maid to carry too, why don't he asked her to use a trolley to push. Really feel sorry n pitied the maid for her pain on her back!

Well handling of the situation from Mindef on the situation for the recruit. This demonstrated again that our army are not easily disrupted by instigation from hostile entities.

"NSman who made maid carry field pack owns up: Mindef"

The SAF serviceman who was photographed with his maid carrying his field pack has identified himself to his Commander and has been counselled, says Mindef. The photographed was posted in STOMP on Mar 27 and had ignited an uproar among netizens, who questioned if youths today are too 'spoilt' and 'pampered'. In response to the story, Colonel Desmond Tan, Director of Mindef Public Affairs, said: "The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has completed its investigation into the recent case of a serviceman who was photographed with his domestic helper carrying his field pack (“Deafening silence in army backpack saga’’ by Mr Patrick Tan; Saturday). "The serviceman concerned has identified himsel ...
