Caught in the Act
Man rents camera from my store with fake info and doesn't return it

STOMPer Jackie claims that the man in this video rented camera equipment from his store with false information, then failed to return it the next day.

The unhappy STOMPer describes the incident in an email:

"I am the owner of a company that rents cameras and camera equipment.

"On Dec 20 at about 10:00 am, a man came into my store wanting to rent a camera and some equipment, claiming it was for a photo shoot.

"We issued the equipment he requested, and he paid the rental fee of $140. He then informed me that he would return the camera the following day at 9:30 am.

"Our company policy insists verifying identity using an NRIC for rental. However, he claimed that he had lost his NRIC and produced a photocopy of a driving license. In addition, he had produced a government letter with a government letterhead with his name and address.

"I accepted his documentary proof and kept the photocopy of the driving license. He then left my store. The following day, he did not return the equipment. I called the contact number he provided, but found there was no such person there.

"I visited his address but soon realized there wasn't a unit with the number he provided. In addition, I also realized that the postal code was wrong, with 7 digits.

"I have since made a report for police assistance. I captured the man's image on CCTV and want to warn others about this man."

You have so many cameras in your shop, why you don't use one to take his picture so that you can give to police. CCTV pics are not clear and the angle shows the top of his head, not his full face.

do you know there's such thing as "fake government letter" and "stolen driving license"? next time, you should get your customers to pay a deposit plus also a written agreement. anyway, there's nothing wrong to post this on stomp, even though you already made a police report. cos this can also be used to appeal for witnesses who have seen these "culprit". hopefully this guy will be caught..

Your identity verification is too lax lah. Tighten it up. Sometimes it is wiser to decline a business than to end up with a bad one. When in doubt, act on the cautious side.

Don't you collect refundable deposit, just in case you meet such case?? What happens if everybody follows his steps. You'll soon close shop leh.
