Want China Times reported that international audiences have named Jackie Chan and Zhang Ziyi as their favorite Chinese actor and actress and comedies as their favorite genre in Chinese cinema, according to a recent survey on the global influence of China's film industry.
The survey was conducted by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture, a research institute founded by Beijing Normal University and the US-based International Data Group. According to the director of the institute, the results of the survey were compiled from 1,117 internet questionnaires completed by audiences from 107 countries around the world.
The list of favorite Chinese actors was topped by action hero Jackie Chan, followed by martial arts legend Bruce Lee and kung fu star Jet Li. Zhang Ziyi, who rose to fame after starring in Ang Lee's 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was voted favorite Chinese actress. Zhang was followed by her Memoirs of a Geisha co-star Gong Li, with Fan Bingbing, who will reportedly have a role in the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster Iron Man 3, coming in at number three.
Zhang Yimou, probably best known outside China for Hero and House of Flying Daggers, was voted favorite Chinese director. In second place was Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, who has just won his second best director Oscar for Life of Pi, while Chen Kaige, who won the Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival for Farewell My Concubine, ranked third.
